I am appalled at the UK Government’s flip-flopping on LGBT+ equality. After abandoning its promise to outlaw the outdated practice recently, it has now said it will only ban conversion “therapy” for gay or bisexual people, but not trans people. This move shows the Conservative Government’s indifference to the very real threats that exist to the LGBT+ community and a clear lack of commitment to equality.

The UK Government committed to banning conversion therapy in England and Wales in 2018. Yet nearly 4 years have passed and there is still nothing in place to ban “therapy” that seeks to change or suppress someone’s sexuality or gender identity.

Conversion therapy should have been banned a long time ago. The Conservatives have once again broken its promises and have continued to look the other way, allowing this dangerous practice to continue. 

I am proud that in Wales, our Welsh Labour Government is seeking urgent legal advice on the impact of the UK Government’s decision and will seek the devolution of any necessary additional powers required to see this through. Only Labour governments can be trusted to deliver on LGBT+ equality.
