Thank you to all those who have contacted me in recent days regarding COVID vaccine passports.
All approaches to protecting public health whilst enabling the country to safely reopen should be explored. However, the domestic vaccine passports the UK Government are proposing pose significant ethical, equitable, and logistical questions, plus additional costs for businesses.
There is insufficient evidence to support that domestic vaccine passports prevent transmission, whilst I am concerned about possible fraud, data and privacy concerns, and the risks in creating a discriminatory two-tiered system and false sense of security among holders. Based on those details I would oppose vaccine passports in a Commons vote and I remain in contact with Welsh Government who retain independent powers on this matter.
Protecting public health and guaranteeing peace of mind for all must be a top priority as we cautiously emerge from restrictions, therefore, we should remain open-minded to evolving science and research. My focus remains on supporting the Welsh Labour Government’s hugely successful vaccine rollout and the test, trace, isolate system.
